1. Proton officially appointed Geely as foreign strategic partner (FSP)
It is now official that DRB-Hicom has reached agreement with Geely to acquire 49.9% equity stake in Proton. The Proton-Geely deal is the beginning for Geely to become Proton FSP and Geely will acquire 51% stake of Lotus, and the remaining stake will be bought over by Etika Strategy, which owned by Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary, who happens to control DRB-Hicom.
The partnership aims to elevate Proton as one of the most competitive brand in Malaysia and a leading brand in Southeast Asia. Through the partnership, Proton will become a part of Volvo and Geely joint venture and will have access to Geely technologies. The partnership aims to expand Proton technological competitiveness, increase in market TIV, and catalyzes production growth.
2. 2017 April vehicle sales data
MAA recently releases the vehicle sales data for April, there are 42,746 register units, a total decline of 10,971 units from March 2017. As compared to last year April, the total number of registered vehicle raised by 544 units. Up till 2017 April, there are total of 183,586 units being registered and it shows good sign given that last year YTD is only 173,453 units. 3. Perodua Myvi reaching 1 Million units.
Perodua Myvi is truly Malaysian people’s car. Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua), the country’s largest carmaker by volume, said the production of its best-selling Perodua Myvi model will reach one million units this month. The Perodua Myvi which was introduced in May 2005 and was Malaysia’s number one car model until the end of 2014. The model continues to be among the top bestselling models in the country currently.
4. 2018 Toyota Camry for Japanese Market, possible Malaysia?
Toyota Japan unveil the Japan spec 2018 Camry. The new Camry is being redesigned with a premium and luxurious outlook. There will be high end hybrid versions to be unveiled soon. The 2018 Camry is based on the GA-K iteration of the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform, which also underpins the new Prius. The interior is now more premium with the ‘S line’ metallic trim line that flows down from the instrument cluster towards the center console. It is expected the Camry will adopt a new 2.5 litre Dynamic Force engine and 8 speed automatic transmission.
5. Peugeot Traveller soon to be released.
The Peugeot Traveller is Peugeot upcoming 8 seaters MPV. Peugeot will be providing the Traveller to the 2017 SEA Games and Para Games. The Traveller shares the same platform and features with Toyota ProAce and Citreon Space Tourer. The Traveller is 4,956mm long with a 3,275mm wheelbase. The Traveller is a people carrier with 8 seaters in 2-3-3 formations and it is powered by a 2.0 litre turbodiesel with six-speed torque converter gearbox. Safety wise, the Traveller comes with six airbags, ESP, HSA, blind spot monitoring and driver attention alert. It is great to see Peugeot is stepping up their game and venture into big MPV that go head to head with Alphard and Vellfire.
